Tennis Fares Well at Hall of Fame Invitational

NEWPORT, R.I. – Each of Rhode Island's tandems picked up at least one victory over the weekend as the Rams competed at the International Tennis Hall of Fame Women's Collegiate Invitational.

The three-day event was hosted at the prestigious International Tennis Hall of Fame.

"We were very excited to be back competing at such a prestigious event on the grass courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame this weekend," Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "Overall, I was very pleased with how we got better with each match, trusted and understood the process, and developed both on and off the court."

Rhode Island had four doubles teams representing the program. The teams of Nadia Rajan/Nikki Fernando and Valentina Cvackova/Sophie Hermann both went 3-1 over the weekend, getting stronger with each date of competition.

After dropping their opening match on Friday to Georgetown's McHaley Ho and Chloe Bendetti, Rajan and Fernando dominated their final three matches. On Saturday, Rajan and Fernando knocked off the Providence team of Mae Abreau/Erika Beltran Beckley 8-1 before beating PC's Lauren Carson/Camila Barrera Aguirre 6-2, 6-1 later in the day.

On Sunday, Rajan and Fernando made it three straight wins over Providence teams, beating Vannelie Melendez/Hiba El Khalifi, 6-2, 6-2.

The Rhode Island team of Cvackova and Herrman similarly won three straight matches after coming up short on Friday. After falling to Georgetown's Olivia Ashton/Katie Garofolo-Ro 7-6 (5), 6-3, Cvackova and Herrman blanked the PC team of Lauren Carson/Camila Barrera Aguirre 8-0 early on Saturday. That was followed by a 6-1, 7-6 (7) win over Vannelie Melendez/Hiba El Khalifi Saturday afternoon.

Cvackova and Herrman wrapped up their weekend with a clean 6-3. 6-1 sweep of Providence's Mae Abreu and Erika Beltran.

Two of Rhody's teams won their opening matches. Ava Grnja and Steph Hylton paired up for a 7-6 (4), 6-4 sweep of the Dartmouth team of Valentina Cruz and Ujvala Jupalli on Friday. Also on Friday, Priyanka Shanker and Blake Rothchild delivered a 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 marathon win over the Providence team of Vannelie Melendez and Hiba El Khalifi.

"We will get back to work for two more weeks before our home Fall Invite on September 30 and October 1," Brobeck said. "Let's go Rhody Rams!"
