RHODE ISLAND VS. PROVIDENCE - SERIES NOTES
  • According to Rhode Island records, Rhode Island and Providence are meeting for the 136th time, with Providence leading the series 77-58.
  • According to Providence records, the series is 77-56. The Friars count the first two meetings between the schools as exhibitions.
  • The first meeting was 104 years to the day on Saturday. On Dec. 7, 1920 head coach Frank Keaney and the Rams defeated Providence 87-25 in Keaney's first game as head coach.
  • Though the Providence records indicate the game was an exhibition, the NCAA records include the game among the program-record 401 wins that Keaney recorded from 1920-48.
  • The Rams are looking to start 9-0 for the first time since the 1947-48 season, when Keaney opened with nine straight wins in his final season at the helm.
  • The Friars are looking for their second straight win after defeating BYU Tuesday night.
  • Providence had Bryce Hopkins back for the first time this season, and he had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists in the victory over BYU.
  • The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Friars, all of which happened at the Battle 4 Atlantis, where Providence fell to Oklahoma (79-77), Davidson (69-58) and No. 14/15 Indiana (89-73).
  • Providence head coach Kim English is familiar with Rhode Island. He was the head coach at George Mason for two years before joining the Friars last season.
  • Rhode Island is 40-29 at the home team against Providence.
  • Providence has won the last three meetings, with Rhody's last win in the series coming in the form of a 75-61 victory on Dec. 6, 2019.
