KINGSTON, R.I. — Rhode Island men's track and field senior Matt Santy won the URI Heptathlon to open the indoor season strong Friday. Santy collected 4900 points over the two-day event held at Mackal Field House.

Santy was the lone attached competitor for Rhode Island. He finished seventh in the 60 meters (7.36s), first in the long jump (7.46m), sixth in the shot put (11.08m), first in the high jump (2.15m), fourth in the 60m hurdles (9.02s), fourth in the pole vault (3.50m) and 11th in the 1000m (3:18.10).
Santy's mark in the long jump broke the school record he set last season (24' 3.50"). Before that leap, Jeff Woods held the record for over 30 years, marking 24' 2.25" on Feb. 22, 1991.
