NEWPORT, R.I. – Rhode Island kept its winning ways going, blanking Colgate 7-0 to win its fourth consecutive match Saturday evening.
The Rams (5-2) got straight set victories from
Sophie Herrman (No. 1),
Valentina Cvackova (No. 3),
Nikki Fernando (No. 4) and
Klara Nelander (No. 5).
Nadia Rajan (No. 2) and
Steph Hylton (No. 6) both rallied from a one-set deficit to pick up wins of their own.
Fernando dropped just three games as she rolled past Carina Cristobal 6-2, 6-1. She and Herrman – who beat Sophia Montero 6-0, 7-5 – have won five straight matches for Rhode Island. Herrman's victory was her team-leading 10th singles victory of the year. Nelander's 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 over Eliza Podlas was her third in a row.
Valentina Cvackova dominated at No. 3 singles. She scored a 6-1, 6-3 win over Addie Ecklund.
Rajan dropped her opening set against Amelia Galin 6-1. However, she outlasted Galin 7-5 to even the match, then Rajan took control of the match by winning the third set 6-2. Hylton's match against Sasha Herman at No. 6 was an evenly played back-and-forth affair. Herman took the first set 6-4, the same score by which Hylton took the second. It was Hylton winning the super-tiebreaker set, 10-5.
"This was a good team win today against a fiery Colgate squad," Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "We are happy with how we are competing and finding ways to win when we are not playing our best tennis. Those are signs of confidence and trust in our preparation."
Rhode Island is back at the International Tennis Hall of Fame for a pair of matches next weekend. The Rams host Stony Brook Saturday, March 2 at 4:30 p.m. and then Hofstra on Sunday, March 3 at 4:30 p.m.
