KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke announced that graduate transfer Sean Magarian will join the Rams next fall, in time for the 2024-25 season.
One of the top golfers in NCAA Division II, Magarian is the defending Northeast-10 individual champion. He helped the Greyhounds win back-to-back team titles at the NE-10 Championship in 2021 and 2022. A four-time NE-10 Player of the Week and two-time conference Rookie of the Week, he has three tournament titles to his credit.
"I am really looking forward to having Sean with us," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "We have had some solid leadership the past few years in Jordan Brajcich,
Brandon Gillis, and now
Bryson Richards. Sean will be our only last-year player and will have four years of college golf experience.
"He is just a grinder and the kind of player with whom we've been successful. He played for a great coach in John O'Hara at Assumption but wanted to test his talent against a more rigorous environment and schedule.
"We should have our best 'top seven' in decades so he will have to play well to get in the lineup, but I have a gut feeling he will do just that."
A two-time Northeast-10 All-Conference selection, Magarian earned first team honors in 2022 and a second team in 2023. He also is an NE-10 All-Academic Team honoree. When he comes to URI, he plans to pursue a master's degree in Business Management.
An all-around athlete, the Worcester, Mass. native played golf, hockey and baseball during his high school days at West Boylston. He served as a team captain in golf and hockey. In high school, he set the West Boylston school record with 55 career wins and was the individual district champion in 2018 and 2019.
In the summer of 2022, Magarian won the Worcester County Amateur, shooting back-to-back rounds of 67 and 69 to win the title by five strokes.
Magarian will have one season of eligibility with Rhode Island.
