KINSGTON, R.I. – Rhode Island's depth showed as the Rams defeated Bryant for its third straight victory Wednesday at the URI Tennis Complex.
The Rams (12-4) got wins from the third, fourth and fifth singles spots, as well as the second and third doubles teams to secure the victory. Rhody was also leading handily at No. 1 singles when play was halted.
The teams of
Ava Grnja and
Priyanka Shanker at No. 2 and
Klara Nelander and
Sophie Herrman at No. 3 doubles keyed the way for the team point. Grnja and Shanker were able to grind out the 7-6 (5) win over Yahli Moy and Maria Jose Hernandez Diaz to secure the doubles point.
In singles action, Fernando, Nelander and
Steph Hylton all won in straight sets. Fernando have up just two games while beating Maria Jose Hernandez Diaz 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. Nelander was just as strong at No. 4 with her 6-3, 6-1 win over Caitlyn Monson.
Hylton scored a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win at No. 5 over Lisa Marie Dugec. That match ended play. Rhody's
Sophie Herrman was up 6-1, 1-6, 5-1 when play was stopped.
"We got away from our identity in doubles a bit today," Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "With that said, we showed toughness finding ways to win in singles. We are looking forward to two Atlantic 10 matches in Philadelphia this weekend."
