RHODE ISLAND VS. CAMPBELL - SERIES NOTES

  • Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the Rams and the Camels.
  • Campbell joined CAA Football ahead of the 2023 season, along with North Carolina A&T. Rhody defeated the Aggies 31-24 on its senior day last year in the first meeting between the two programs (Nov. 11).
  • Of URI's 12 scheduled opponents, three are first-timers: Minnesota, Campbell and LIU. The Camels are the only team making the trip to Meade Stadium.
  • Campbell went 4-4 in its first year of CAA Football play, finishing with a 5-6 overall record.
  • This year, the Camels are off to a split start thanks to a loss at Liberty (41-24) and a road win over No. 17 Western Carolina (24-16).
  • Campbell has just one New England native on its roster in Sammy Malignaggi (Nashua, N.H.). He is the second running back on the team's depth chart.
  • Wideout Sincere Brown leads the league in receiving yards with 234. He has caught nine passes with one for a touchdown.

CONFERENCE PLAY

  • Rhode Island is looking to put together its fifth straight year with record of .500 or better in CAA Football play.
  • Since 2020, the Rams have gone 2-1, 4-4, 5-3 and 4-4.
  • URI won its league opener in each of those campaigns.
  • In head coach Jim Fleming's tenure, Rhody has posted a 24-51 record against CAA Football opponents.
  • Each year that Rhode Island has won its first conference game, the team has gone on to post a CAA Football record of at least .500.
  • The Rams did so in 2018 by knocking off Delaware (21-19; Aug. 30), in 2020 opposite Villanova (40-37 (OT); March 13), in 2021 at UAlbany (16-14; Sept. 11), in 2022 at Stony Brook (35-14; Sept. 1) and against the Seawolves once again in 2023 (35-14; Sept. 8).

RAMS TO HONOR 1984 & '85 TEAMS AT HALFTIME

  • Rhode Island will honor its Hall of Fame 1984 and 1985 teams at halftime during the game against Campbell as part of a 20-year reunion.
  • Each team went 10-3 to cap off a five-year period that saw the Rams post consecutive winning seasons.
  • Rhody won the Lambert Trophy (top team in the East) twice while head coach Bob Griffin collected Conference & Regional Coach of the Year honors.
  • URI advanced to the I-AA playoffs as well, picking up first round wins over Richmond (23-17; Dec. 1, 1984) and Akron (35-27; Nov. 30, 1985).
  • In 1984, the team earned a 22-7 victory over Boston University in front of the largest crowd in Meade Stadium history (13,052; Oct. 20).
  • Quarterback Tom Ehrhardt was a First Team AP All-American in 1984-85 and was joined on the First Team in '85 by wide receiver Brian Forster and offensive lineman Bob White.
  • Defensive back Mike Cassidy was honorable mention in 1985.

BROCKWELL BREAKING OUT

  • Inside linebacker Cole Brockwell is off to a strong start in his redshirt senior season.
  • In his first year as a starter, he leads the team with 19 tackles through two games.
  • That total was bolstered by a career-high 13 stops made during the game against Minnesota (Sept. 7).
  • The Westport, Conn. native recorded seven solo stops opposite the Golden Gophers.
  • Brockwell has seen his role steadily increase since his freshman season back in 2019.
  • He has appeared in 23 straight games for URI as a key member of both the defense and special teams units.
