How it Happened
Rhode Island battled, but fell 2-1 on the road to league-leading Massachusetts Sunday afternoon.
UMass set the tone early, scoring the first goal in less than five minutes into the start of the game. The Minutewomen drew a foul that sent Ella Curry to set up a free kick. The blast by Curry went through the crowded box and found the back of the net past Rhody keeper Abby McCarthy.Â
Tierra Garniss scored an equalizer in the 19th minute, beating the defender and finishing with a toe poke for her first goal of the season. The teams went into the half knotted at 1-1.
In the 74th minute, Curry had a shot from the corner that was headed in by Hannah Peric for the 2-1 UMass lead. Â
The Rams were unable to get a shot off in the remainder of the game, and the hosts held on to win.Â
