SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Rhode Island won its second match in as many days, knocking off Colgate 5-2 Sunday afternoon.
Freshmen
Grace Darcy and Anastasia Petterson both won singles matches in straight sets. They also paired up to win at No. 2 doubles to help the Rams (2-0) scored three team points. Darcy won at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-2. Petterson scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles.
Junior
Nikki Fernando won at No. 3 singles 7-5, 6-0. The win was her 39th career singles win, tying her with Rachel Smilansky for the 10th most among URI players over the last 16 seasons.
Senior
Klara Nelander won her second singles match in as many days, grabbing a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles. She also teamed with junior
Sophie Herrman for a win at No. 3 doubles.
"This was a tough win on the road against a much improved Colgate team," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "We need to rest up and get back to work. We still have a lot of areas we can improve on and it starts with doubles. We are Looking forward to playing at home the next couple of matches."
Rhode Island is back in action Saturday, Feb. 1 when it hosts Fairfield at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.
