KETTERING, Ohio - Rhode Island will play its most challenging event of the Fall when it heads to the Moraine Intercollegiate hosted by Miami of Ohio this week.
The two-day, three-round tournament begins Monday morning. The 14-team field includes schools from the Big East (Connecticut, Xavier); Big Ten (Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State); and SEC (Missouri). Also in the field are fellow Atlantic 10 schools Dayton and VCU, the Horizon League's Wright State and host Miami (Ohio), which competes in the MAC.
"This is the best field we've faced in my 15 years," Rhode Island coach Gregg Burke said. "We're facing the same challenge we faced at the National Golf Invitational last May. Every team but one was ranked better than us, and the one that wasn't had just beat us in the Atlantic 10 Championship. At Moraine every team is ranked better than us, and Connecticut just beat us at GreatHorse."
Moraine Country Club was the site of the 1945 PGA Championship, where Byron Nelson won his ninth major title. In 2016, the course underwent a major renovation, returning to a Scottish links style course.
Rhode Island will be represented by Luke Stennett, Tony Liu, Tyler Brueau, Aidan O'Donovan and Josiah Tong.
"This will be about focus and concentration," Burke said. "We can't give away shots and expect to do well."
