CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Rhode Island matched its best performance in program history at the Atlantic 10 Men's Cross Country Championships, finishing third as a team.
A surge over the final 2K of the 8K race at the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course pushed the Rams up three spots in the final standings. Rhody was in sixth place at the 6K mark, but several URI runners finished strong to help the team move up.
It was the first time since 1980 Rhode Island finished as high as third at the league championship. In 1980 - the third league meet on record there were only seven teams that competed.
Juniors
Nick Martin and
Garrett Hartline led the way, finishing eighth and 16th, respectively. With his finish, Martin earned All-Atlantic 10 honors with his time of 24:08.6. He was one of 10 runners to cross the line in a span of 25 seconds in the highly competitive race. George Washington's Michael Bohlke was the individual winner in a time of 23:46.4.
Junior
Brayton Gazerro and sophomore Maddon Jordan provided significant moves late in the race. Gazerro was in 46th place at the 3K mark. He jumped 16 spots into 30th place by the 6K mark, and then leaped another nine spots to give Rhode Island a 21st-place finish.
Jordan passed 14 runners over the final 2K of the race to finish in 35th place as URI's fourth fastest runner on the day. Sophomore
Matt Lucas was just behind him in 37th place. Also scoring for Rhode Island were freshman
Ryan Kaiser (56th place) and junior
Jesse Principe (60th place). Principe passed 11 runners in the final 2K.
Loyola Chicago won its third team title in four years with 28 points. The Ramblers had five of the top nine finishers in the 128-runner field. All seven Loyola Chicago scorers finished in the top 26.
Saint Joseph's was second with 104, points, followed by Rhode Island (116), George Mason (118) and La Salle (138) in the top five.
