Rams Make Strong Move in Round Two

Team Standings | Player Leaderboard

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – After a tough opening round, Rhode Island made a hard charge up the leaderboard behind the strong play of Luke Stennett, Aidan O'Donovan and Tyler Bruneau during the second round of the World Golf Village Collegiate.

Playing on the par-72 King & Bear Golf Course, the Rams were just 4-over par as a team in Round Two when play was halted due to darkness. Those players who hadn't completed their rounds will do so Tuesday morning before the final round starts.

Stennett was fourth out of 100 players through his first two rounds. After a solid 2-over in Round One, he was 1-under in the afternoon round. He is nine strokes behind leader Brett Schell (-8) of North Florida. Two other North Florida players – Jason Duff and Filippo Serra – are tied for second place at 1-under.

O'Donovan shaved four strokes off his opening round to shoot even par in Round Two. He is in a five-way tie for 11th place entering Tuesday.

Bruneau rebounded nicely in the second round. After a plus-10 in the first round, he was 1-over in the afternoon. He moved from a tie for 78th place all the way up to 47th.

The play of Rhode Island's top three helped the team move from 12th place in the team standings up to fifth place by the time play stopped. North Florida is well ahead of the field at even par as a team. The next five teams, including URI, are all between plus-25 and plus-30, making for a tight battle for second place Tuesday.

Josiah Tong was plus-14 overall with  hole left to complete in his second round. After shooting plus-10 in the first round, he was plus-4 with the par-3 second hole to go. URI's fifth golfer, Tony Liu is plus-21 through two rounds.

Round Three begins at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said...
"It is pretty obvious there was some rust, but after spending a large part of the day in last place, we came from 16 shots behind the second place team to tie it up. We slipped back a bit, but it was an impressive move.

"Luke continues his stronghold as our top player. His ball striking was impressive.  Aidan showed his growth as a player all day long. Tyler had a terrible start but ended up being 1 over for the final 28 holes. He will learn how to correct himself out there and will also learn to lose his memory on bad shots while playing.

"Clearly we are a three-man team looking for more help from the four and five spots. Tomorrow is a day we can show who we are."
