KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's track & field team had its highest finish since 2019-20 at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championship, coming in fifth overall.
The Rams completed Saturday's competition at the Virginia Beach Sports Center with 75.7 team points, finishing just behind UMass' 80.5 and well ahead of Duquesne's 53. George Mason won the women's title with 119.5 points.
Lily Saul was named Track Performer of the Meet, as she won both the Mile and the 1000m. Competing in the Mile for the first time at the A-10 Championship, Saul set a meet record while running a personal-best 4:43.23. She beat Loyola Chicago's Emma Watcke by .52 seconds with a thrilling kick. In the 1000m, Saul crossed the line first in 2:49.87.
Sydney Federico accounted for Rhode Island's other gold medal, winning the 400m. She ran it in 55.34 for the first individual A-10 title of her career.
Five years ago, URI finished third at the championship meet.
Highlights
- Megan Wood was second in the shotput with a 46' 7 1/2" toss. VCU's Eryn Byrd won the event with a mark of 48' 4 3/4" inches.
- Macy Daigle tied with UMass' Courtney Rowland for third place in the high jump. Both student-athletes cleared 5' 5".
- The team of Abigail Colella, Lily Saul, Odette van Wyk and Sydney Federico claimed a bronze medal in the 4x400m Relay with a time of 3:46.62. Rhody was just about a second off Richmond's winning pace in the event.
- van Wyk just missed a podium finish in the 200m, coming in fourth with a time of 24.56. George Mason's Susan Adenitan was third in 24.35 seconds. van Wyk also scored three points in the 60m final with a sixth-place performance (7.68).
- Carollin Mellin ran the 800m in 2:18.08, coming in sixth place.
- Kelsey Wolff, Erin Hurley, Lindsay Turgeon and Elise LePage finished the 4x800m Relay sixth overall in 9:14.70.
- Lily MacDonald scored two points with her seventh-place finish in the triple jump (38' 4 3/4").
