Brown Outlasts Rhode Island for 5-2 win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown ended Rhode Island's four-matching winning streak, beating the Rams 5-2 in a highly competitive match Sunday afternoon.

Brown (5-5) took the doubles point and got a second team point with Hannah Shen's straight-set win at No. 2 singles. Rhody (8-2) got straight-set wins from at No. 3 from Nikki Fernando and No. 1 from Katharina Spieth, tying the team score 2-2.

A marathon match at No. 4 singles between Brown's Ali Maguy and URI's Grace Darcy went the way of the Bears. Darcy took the first set 6-3, but Maguy evened things by taking the second set 7-5. Maguy took the third 6-4 to put Brown in front, 3-2. A victory by Sari Woo clinched the team win for the host Bears.

"It was a tough loss today against a good Brown team," Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "I am proud of the team, how they competed, and how they believed in themselves in singles. There were small margins, but also a lot of positives we can build on. We needed a physical match like this."

Rhode Island is off for 10 days before it heads to Louisiana for three matches from March 12-15. The Rams play at Northwestern State on March 12, at New Orleans March 13 and at Nicholls State March 15. Brobeck was the head coach at Northwestern State from 2020-23.
