How it Happened
Despite another superb outing from
Avery Vale-Cruz, Rhode Island dropped its series opener at George Washington, falling 1-0 Saturday afternoon.
Vale-Cruz (4-5) hurled her third complete game of the week, limiting the Revolutionaries (29-17, 13-8 A-10) to just three hits. She retired 11 of the first 12 batters she faced, striking out six batters over the first three innings.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, M Mays hit a two-out solo home run for the lone run of the game. The only other hit Vale-Cruz allowed the rest of the way was a bunt single.
Rhode Island (12-30, 5-15 A-10) was unable to get any runners past second base through the first six innings. In the top of the seventh,
Sydney Orndorff led off with an infield single. Pinch runner
Ella Morris reached second on a sacrifice bunt by
Allison Jones.
With two outs,
Hannah Hernandez reached on a fielder's choice, putting runners on the corners. However, a groundout ended the game.
