Magarian Invited to Northeast Amateur

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island's Sean Magarian was selected to play in the 63rd Northeast Amateur, which begins Wednesday at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I.

The invitation-only tournament - which runs through June 21 - is considered one of the top amateur events in the world and annually attracts a field of the very best junior, college, and mid-amateur players. Past winners have included PGA greats and golf major winners  such as Colin Morikawa, Hal Sutton, Ben Crenshaw, and David Duval. Current European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald has also won the event.

"This is such a wonderful honor for a deserving young man in Sean," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "He was our best player over the two post-season events - the Atlantic 10 Championship and National Golf Invitational - and a great leader all season.

"A year ago Sean had just graduated from Division II Assumption University but went on to fulfill a dream as a Division I golfer, a few courses short of an MBA he started at URI, and about to be named for the first time as an All-American Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association. So playing in this is icing on the cake."

The Northeast Amateur is by Chariman and former URI golfer Ben Tuthill.
