How it Happened
Rhode Island could not crack the vaunted Connecticut defense, falling to the Huskies 2-0 Thursday night at the URI Soccer Complex.
The Rams were aggressive early and outshot UConn 8-4 in the first half. However, keeper Ava Yamas made four saves to keep Rhody off the scoreboard.
Connecticut took advantage of its opportunities. URI limited the visitors to two shots on goal in the first half. However, one of those resulted in a goal by Chioma Okafor. Alexandra Taylor beat the URI defense down the right side and sent a cross to Okafor, who headed it home in the 16th minute.
The Huskies padded the lead just two minutes into the second half. Se-Hanna Mars had possession deep in the Rhody zone and sent a cross to Abbey Merchant, who was able to knock it home through a crowd in front of the net.
Rhode Island was unable to apply much pressure in the second half. UConn limited URI to three shots after the break, one of which were on goal. It was the fourth shutout in six matches for the Huskies.
