KINGSTON, R.I. - Defensive back
Justin Carcel was named the CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning,
Carcel had two interceptions and one pass break up during Saturday's 28-7 victory over LIU. The safety personally ended three of LIU's 12 possessions. Carcel's second interception led to Rhode Island's first touchdown of the day. He also had a pass break up on fourth down to force a turnover on downs at the URI 8-yard line. He was part of a defense that held LIU to 2-of-12 on third down and 1-for-3 on fourth downs.
Rhode Island has won each of the last two CAA Football Defensive Player of the Week awards, as linebacker
Moses Meus took the honor last week. The Rams have held back-to-back opponents to single digits for the first time in 35 years. Rhody won at Holy Cross 9-7 and beat LIU 28-7. In 1990, URI blanked Richmond 37-0 and beat Brown 23-3 in consecutive weeks.
The Rams travel to Kalamazoo this week to take on FBS level Western Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 27. Game time is 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
