Rams Battle Powerful Field at Moraine Intercollegiate Monday

Live Stats

KINGSTON, R.I.
- Rhode Island makes a return trip to the Moraine Intercollegiate, where it had a strong showing a year ago. In 2025, the Rams placed fourth out of 14 teams and were the highest-placing non-Power 4 school in the field.

Hosted by Miami (Ohio), the 2026 field has 13 schools, including Big 10 schools Minnesota, Penn State and Wisconsin, as well as Connecticut and Xavier from the Big East. Also in the field are fellow Atlantic 10 schools Dayton, George Mason and VCU, Jacksonville State and Sam Houston from Conference USA, Louisiana (Sun Belt), Alabama Birmingham (American Athletic Conference), Ohio (Mid-America Conference), Jacksonville State and Wright State (Horizon League).

"We're incredibly excited to return to this tournament as it is the toughest field we face all year," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "The golf course is a top five of my 15 years coaching. We will be taking the same guys who won at GreatHorse and hope this to be a good learning experience. I always have to remind myself that three guys in our starting lineup combined for just one college tournament a year ago."

Tony Liu - who is coming off his first career tournament title at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse - leads the URI contingent. Last year, Liu had one of his best finishes of the season at the Moraine, placing 11th out of 78 golfers. He was under par in all three rounds of the tournament, finishing five-under par overall.

Also representing the Rams will be Jack Quinn, Josiah Tong, Sebastian Carlsson and Owen Rooney.

Coming off the team title at at GreatHorse, Burke and the team had a special weekend on Martha's Vineyard.

"We took last weekend as a team bonding experience," Burke said. "We went to Martha's Vineyard and played three spectacular golf courses. The golf, the food, the camaraderie, and both the stories and laughter is worth 1000 times over. The best part was having former URI quarterback, John Priore as a host. His stories of success with the foundation of being a URI athlete meant the world to the team."

Rhode Island begins play at Moraine Monday with the first two of three rounds. Moraine Country Club was the site of the 1945 PGA Championship, where Byron Nelson won his ninth major title. In 2016, the course underwent a major renovation, returning to a Scottish links style course.
