Mol Highlights Strong Day for Rams at A10 Masters

Rhode Island Results

DAVIDSON, N.C.
- Rhode Island's Iben Mol had an impressive day at the Atlantic 10 Masters, winning two singles matches and a doubles match Friday.

Mol, a first-year player, reached the semifinals in the singles bracket. She faced Richmond's Lucy Webber in the opening round of the singles draw. She battled back after dropping the first set 6-4. Mol was dominant from there, winning the second set 6-2 and the third set 6-1.

Mol advanced to face Davidson's Bryson Langford in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon. Langford, an A10 All-Conference selection last season, was a straight-set winner over Elena Fleming of Saint Joseph's, 6-3, 6-0.

It was Mol jumping out early, taking the first set 6-4. Langford evened the match by taking the second set 6-2. Mol regained the momentum and earned a spot in the semifinals by winning the third set 6-3.

On Saturday, Mol will face Duquesne's Dasha Chichkina with a spot in the finals on the line.

It was all part of a huge day for Mol. She got the day off to a strong start for the Rams when she and third-year player Grace Darcy were victorious in the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket. In the most competitive match of the round of the day, the Rhody pair defeated Davidson's Chalotte Calderwood and Bryson Langford, 8-6.

Despite playing their first match together. Darcy and Mol advanced to the semifinals, where they will take on VCU's team of Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando and Andrea Magallanes. The winner of that match will earn a spot in Sunday's final.

Rhode Island's Ellen Katzer also competed in the singles draw. She lost to Davidson's Charlotte Calderwood in the opening round, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

However, Katzer rebounded with a win in the consolation bracket. Facing Fordham's Paola Ueno Dalmonico, Katzer battled back from a set down to win in a super-set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 10-3. She will face Sophia Jane Thorne of VCU in the consolation semis.

""This was a great start to the tournament for the Rams,: Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "We got solid doubles play in the morning followed by two rounds of singles. I am proud of our freshmen, Iben and Ellen, for digging deep today.

"We did not play our best tennis, but we fought hard and competed well. We need to take care of our bodies now, and we are looking forward to doubles and singles in the semifinals tomorrow."
