DAVIDSON, N.C. - Rhode Island's
Iben Mol's came up just short in a three-set thriller against Richmond's Sofia Maria Barbulesca Sunday. In a match befitting of a championship match, Barbulesca held off Mol 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to win the women's singles title.
"I am super proud of Iben," Rhode Island coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "She battled through two three-set matches plus a doubles match on the first day, and fought hard today. She did everything we ask her to do."
Mol, a first-year player making her collegiate debut this weekend, took the early lead by winning the first set 6-4. Barbulesca, a junior and two-time A10 First-Team All-Conference selection, held serve to open the second set before the players took turns breaking each other until Barbulesca evened the match by taking the second set 6-4.
The momentum continued into the third set as Barbulesca opened a 4-1 lead. Mol battled back and took the next three matches to tie the score at 4-4. However, Barbulesca recovered to take the next two games and clinch the match.
With the win, Barbulescu earned a spot in the NCAA qualifier for the NCAA Fall Individual Tennis Championship.
Mol finished the A10 Masters going 3-1 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles. She reached the finals in singles and teamed with
Grace Darcy to reach the semifinals in doubles.
