Fernando, Helgesen Sweep A-10 Tennis Awards

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island swept the weekly Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis awards, as senior Nikki Fernando was named the Player of the Week and Kajsa Helgesen was named the league's Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Fernando was a perfect 4-0 over the course of two matches, winning twice each at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead Rhode Island to victories over Hofstra and Providence. In the Hofstra match, she beat Sabira Mohamed 6-1, 6-1 at the top spot and also teamed with Helgesen for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles. A day later, Fernando beat Providence's Camila Barrera 6-2, 6-2 and again paired with Helgesen for a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Fernando has won four straight matches in both singles and doubles. Her doubles win against Providence was the 59th of her career, moving Fernando into a tie for third place in URI's program history. This is the second time in her career Fernando has been the A-10 Player of the Week.

Helgesen - who won her second straight rookie of the week award - won at No. 5 singles against Hofstra and No. 4 singles against Providence. In the Hofstra match, she beat Katarina Drinnchich 6-1, 6-3 and teamed with Fernando for a 6-4 doubles win. A day later, Helgesen beat Providence's Sophie Ahlberg 6-3, 6-3. Like Fernando, Helgesen has won four straight matches in both singles and doubles.

Rhode Island plays on Sunday, when it welcomes NJIT to the International Tennis Hall of Fame for a match that begins at 5:45 p.m.
