RHODE ISLAND AT ALABAMA - SERIES NOTES

  • Rhode Island continues its 2026 season with a three-game series at Alabama. 
  • This is the second trip Rhode Island has made to Tuscaloosa. The first time during the 2003 season when Rhode Island visited the Crimson Tide from Feb. 28 to March 2. 
  • Alabama took two-of-three meetings against Rhode Island in that 2003 series.  
  • The Crimson Tide won the first two games of the series. Rhode Island won game three 7-6. 

RHODE ISLAND AGAINST THE SEC

  • Rhode Island has played 49 games against current Southeastern Conference programs. 
  • The Rams have wins over Alabama (2003), Kentucky (2005), South Carolina (2016), Arkansas (2017), and Missouri (2019). 
  • The most recent SEC trip the Rams have made was in 2024; a 0-3 trip to College Station with Texas A&M. 
  • Rhode Island's last win over an SEC school is an 8-6 win over Mizzou in 2019 at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla. 
  • The 2025 Alabama series is the ninth regular season and 10th overall SEC series for Rhode Island since Raphael Cerrato became the Rams skipper in 2015.
  • In Cerrato's time as head coach, Rhode Island has played regular season series against Florida (2015, 2018), Arkansas (2017), Texas A&M (2018, 2024), Missouri (2019), Auburn (2022), and Tennessee (2022). 
  • In 2016, after winning the program's second Atlantic 10 Championship, No. 4 seed Rhode Island was placed in the Columbia Regional of the NCAA Tournament. 
  • The Rams upset No. 6 South Carolina for the team's first and only NCAA Tournament victory to date.
  • Rhode Island lost its next two games in Columbia, S.C. including a Sunday match up with the Gamecocks on June 5, 2016 ending the Rams season. 
  • After winning the 2025 Atlantic 10 Championship, Rhode Island was a No. 3 seed in the Baton Rouge Regional at LSU. 
  • With loses to Dallas Baptist and Little Rock in the first two games of the regional, Rhode Island never played the host Tigers. 

WE MEET AGAIN

  • Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn was previously the head coach at Maryland from 2018 to 2023. 
  • Vaughn's 2020 Maryland team hosted Rhode Island from Friday, Feb. 21 to Sunday, Feb. 23 in College Park, Md. 
  • Maryland took two out of three from Rhode Island during the series. 
  • The Rams won game two of the series 11-8. 

RECAPPING THE OPENING SERIES

  • Rhode Island began its 2026 season with a four-game series at Jacksonville last weekend from Friday, Feb. 13 - Sunday, Feb. 15. 
  • The Rams lost all four match ups with the Dolphins in northern Florida.
  • Rhode Island featured 14 different starters during the weekend trip and all 14 pitchers who made the trip saw action. 
  • Scott Penney (2B), Ryan Thompson (1B), Reece Moroney, (SS), and Jack Hopko (RF) started all four game of the weekend. 
  • Penney finished the weekend 5-for-12 with a pair of doubles.
  • Thompson batted .300 over the weekend with a home run and three RBIs. 
  • Connor Johnston was the bright spot for a struggling Rhode Island pitching staff. He started the Rams second game on Saturday going five innings allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
