NEWPORT, R.I. - Spurred by a sweep in doubles play, Rhode Island defeated Hofstra 4-1 Saturday night at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport.
The Rams (3-1) took all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles,
Nikki Fernando and
Kajsa Helgesen grabbed a 6-4 win. At the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, the teams of
Grace Darcy and
Anastasia Pettersson and
Sophie Herrman and Ava Granja won by matching 6-0 scores.
Rhody - which has won three straight matches - got victories at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 in singles play.
Nikki Fernando beat Sabira Mohamed 6-1, 6-1. Freshmen
Kajsa Helgesen and
Miruna Scarlat won their matches in straight sets as well. Helgesen defeated Bohdana Bilokon 6-1, 6-3, while Scarlat knocked off Isabella Cardinal, 6-0, 6-4.
Once the team victory was secured, the ongoing matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles were halted.
Sophie Herrman was up a set on Aryana Kahnamoui 6-3, 2-3 when play ended.
Anastasia Pettersson and Bohdana Bilokon split the first two sets when the matched was halted.
Rhode Island is back in action Sunday night when it hosts Providence at the Hall of Fame. Play begins at 5:45 p.m.
