DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Rhode Island is back in action Monday when it begins play at the Stetson-hosted Sam Ryder Intercollegiate.
The 54-hole tournament will be played on the Hills Course at LPGA International. Rhody will be represented by
Luke Stennett,
Aidan O'Donovan,
Josiah Tong,
Tyler Bruneau and
Tony Liu.
The 13-team field includes Appalachian State, Baylor, Campbell, Central Arkansas, Columbia, Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, James Madison, Lipscomb, North Dakota State, Toledo, UTEP and the host Hatters. Rhode Island players will be grouped with Lipscomb, Baylor and Campbell in Monday's opening round.
"This is another tournament with a great field including schools from Texas, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "It is awfully hard to prepare with all the snow on the ground back home, but we are used to doing without so we'll use that as motivation."
From the field, UTEP (No. 75), Stetson (No. 95) and Florida Atlantic (No. 99) are all top 100 programs nationally, according to the Scoreboard rankings, as of Feb. 25.
Rhode Island - which has won four of the seven tournaments it has played this season - is approaching the top 100, landing at No. 112 out of 311 schools ranked. URI has an overall record of 67-10-2. The Rams are the top ranked program in the Atlantic 10, entering the week four spots ahead of VCU.
Most recently Rhody placed sixth at the UNC Greensboro Palmas Del Mar Collegiate in Puerto Rico (Feb. 9-10). The team had been limited in practice time of late due to the historic snowfall that has hit Rhode Island in days.
"We've had a rocky start to the semester in other areas but we're using this as a re-start of sorts," Burke said. "We've asked a number of players to step up in leadership to get us over the hump. Our talent is there, we just need to do more things better."
The Sam Ryder Intercollegiate features two 18-hole rounds on Monday, March 2 and the final 18-hole round on Tuesday, March 3. Each day is slated for an 8 a.m. start. Troy University claimed the team championship at last season's event, then named the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate. The event now is named for PGA Tour professional and former Stetson player Sam Ryder, who has professional wins on the PGA Tour Canada and the Web.com Tour.
The Hills Course features a 6,984-yard, par 72 layout. Designed by Arthur Hills, the course opened in 1997 and is a parkland-style championship course known for its natural wetlands, narrow pine corridors, small greens and strategically placed water hazards. The course was originally known as the Legends Course before being renamed in 2013.
