Kajsa Helgesen won her team-leading 10th singles match of the season and also paired with
Nikki Fernando in a win at No. 1 singles to lead Rhode Island to a 4-0 win over Siena Sunday night.
Helgesen had a strong weekend for the Rams (6-3), who won their second straight match. She posted a clean sweep of Reegan Mullaney at No. 5 singles on Sunday. Over the weekend, Helgesen won both her matches in straight sets, giving up just one game in the process.
Helgesen and Fernando dispatched of Andrea Vargas and Zaara Omar by a 6-1 score at No. 1 doubles. With the win, Fernando moved into a tie for second place in Rhode Island history with 61 career doubles wins. She is tied with Amanda Barletta (2007-10).
Grace Darcy and
Anastasia Pettersson teamed for a similar 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles to give the Rams the point.
Darcy and Pettersson won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively to clinch the team win. Darcy dominated against Vargas, 6-0, 6-4. Petterson led 4-1 in the opening set when her opponent retired from the match.
"Overall, it was a good weekend at home," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "Today against Siena was our most complete match so far this season. We set the tone in doubles and played on our terms in singles which helped us control the momentum swings of the match better."
Rhode Island travels to Quinnipiac for a match on Saturday, March 7. Play begins at 5 p.m.
