Spartans Hand Rams 4-1 Defeat

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif.
- After grabbing the first point of the day, Rhode Island could not maintain its momentum as it lost to San Jose State 4-1 Wednesday afternoon.

URI (7-6) took the doubles point behind the play of its top two teams. Nikki Fernando and Kajsa Helgesen recorded a clean 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles. After San Jose State (7-5) took the third doubles match, Grace Darcy and Anastasia Pettersson battled to a 7-5 win over Camila Celis and Katarina Brajovic to give the Rams the point.

From there, San Jose State took over. The Spartans won at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 1 singles to take a commanding 3-1 lead.

The three remaining matches were all closely contested. After dropping the first set at No. 5 singles 6-1, Rhody's Anastasia Pettersson evened the match by taking the second set 6-4. However, she eventually fell when Camila Celis took the deciding third set 6-2.

"It was a tough and physical match today against a good San Jose State team," Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "These types of outdoor matches are exactly what we need to prepare us for a tough outdoor and A-10 season. We're going to finish strong on Friday before heading back east."

When play was halted, Miruna Scarlat was up a set at No. 6 singles. She took the first set 6-4 against Cristina Losada. Losada was leading the second set 5-1 when the match was called.

At No. 2 singles, Grace Darcy dropped her first set 6-2 against San Jose State's Soledad Capilla. Darcy was close to squaring the match up, as she led 5-3 in the second set when play ended.

After a day off Thursday, Rhode Island will finish its three-match Spring Break trip at Dominican University in San Rafael, California on Friday afternoon.
