RHODE ISLAND VS. FORDHAM - SERIES NOTES

  • Rhode Island and Fordham will meet for the 79th time overall and the second time this season Saturday.
  • URI lead the series, 43-35, but Fordham has won the last two in a row and three of the last four overall.
  • Earlier this season, Fordham rallied to win at URI 70-66 in overtime.
  • Despite taking the loss, Rhode Island never trailed during regulation in the first game.
  • In that first meeting, Rhody led 60-52 with 5:08 left in regulaton. However, the team did not make another field goal in regulation or overtime.
  • Fordham's DeJour Reaves (19), Rikus Schulte (17) and Christian Henry (16) combined for 52 of the teams' points.
  • Rhode Island was led by Tyler Chochran (25 points, nine rebounds) in the first meeting.
  • Fordham is looking to snap a two-game losing streak that had been preceded by a four-game win streak.
  • Rhode Island and Fordham have split 40 previous meetings in Rose Hill.
  • Rose Hill is the oldest active gymnasium actively being used by a Division I program. It opened in 1925.
  • Rhode Island is looking to clinch its second consecutive winning season, and its fourth straight season of increased conference win totals. In A-10 play, URI was 5-13 in 2022-23, 6-12 in 2023-24, 7-11 last year and 7-10 thus far this season.

STANDINGS STILL HAVE SETTLING TO DO ON SATURDAY

  • With one game remaining, Rhode Island has avoided the first day of the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time since 2021.
  • Rhody and Fordham are tied for ninth place in the league standings. 
  • The loser of Saturday's game will be the No. 10 seed at the Atlantic 10 Championship and play in the 5 p.m. game on Thursday, March 12.
  • If Rhode Island wins, it would be in the No. 8 vs. No. 9 game on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
  • Saint Louis has clinched the No. 1 seed  for the championship.
  • VCU will be the No. 2 seed. Dayton and Saint Joseph's have earned the other two double byes, though the final weekend of competition will determine the third and fourth seeds.
  • George Mason will be the No. 5 seed.
  • Seeds No. 6-10, will be made up of Davidson, George Washington, Duquesne, Fordham and Rhode Island, with Saturday's action deciding final order.
  • Richmond, La Salle, St. Bonaventure and Loyola Chicago will be the bottom four.
COCHRAN CLOSING IN ON PROGRAM STEALS RECORD
  • Wing Tyler Cochran had six steals in Rhode Island's win over Duquesne Saturday.
  • It was the fifth team this season he has had five or more in a game.
  • With 81 steals on the season, Cochran is seven away from tying the program's single-season record.
  • Tom Garrick set the Rhode Island record 38 years ago, recording 88 in 1987-88.
  • The only other player to get 80 or more steals in one season was Fatts Russell, who had 86 in 2019-20.
  • Cochran is fourth nationally in total steals and third in steals per game (2.7) steals per game.
  • Cochran has three or more steals in 15 games.
  • Cochran set a Rhode Island single-game program record with nine steals against Stonehill on Nov. 11.
  • He broke the previous mark of eight by Fatts Russell against Saint Louis on March 1, 2020.
  • The 81 steals this season are a career high. 
  • Cochran had 62 steals twice, doing so at Ball State in 2021-22 and at Toledo in 2023-24.
  • Cochran was the MAC Defensive Player of the Year for Toledo in 2023-24.
  • As a team, Rhode Island has 259 steals this season, the sixth most in a single year in program history.
