KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island Baseball's shortstop
Reece Moroney was selected in the 10th round of the 2026 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies as the 309th pick overall on Sunday afternoon.
A Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honoree and the conference's Defensive Player of the Year this season, Moroney finished the year with a program record and league best 90 hits. Moroney's Rhode Island career includes a .337 batting average (eighth highest in program history) and a .431 on base percentage (tied fourth highest in program history).
Moroney's 2026 campaign featured a .370 batting average, 19 doubles, and a career-best 50 RBI. That led the junior to a spot on the 2026 ABCA/Rawlings Div. I All-Northeast Region Team.
He started all 115 games he played in over the last two seasons for Rhode Island. This year, he helped lead Rhode Island to the A-10 Championship game. In 2025, he helped URI win both the Atlantic 10's regular season and conference tournament titles while boosting the squad to a program-record 38 wins.
This is the second consecutive season a Ram has heard their name called in the MLB Draft. Last season,
Anthony DePino was selected in the seventh round of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox as the 196th pick overall. Before DePino, the most recent Rhode Island selection in the MLB Draft was Mark Coley in 2023 (17th round, 503rd pick).
Over the course of program history, 21 different players have been drafted by Major League Baseball organizations, with five going in the top 10 rounds.
