FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - After a rough opening round, Rhode Island showed great improvement in the second round of the Doc Gimmler Saturday. The Rams shot 3-over as a team in the middle round of the tournament, moving its way out of the basement.

Heading into Sunday's final round, the Rams are in 10th place. However, Rhody was in last place by three strokes after an opening round in which it shot 12-over par. With one round left, the Rams are one stroke behind Lafayette.

"This time of year you want to find out where your team is and who is ready to play," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "We have a long way to go as a team for sure, but we seem to have found a top four in Tony Liu, Josiah Tong, Bennett Masterson, and Jack Quinn."

The turnaround for the Rams was led by fourth-year player Tony Liu and first-year player Jack Quinn. Both players shot even-par 70 in the afternoon. Liu had three birdies and three bogeys. Liu leads the URI contingent and is tied for 21st place overall.

Making his collegiate debut, Quinn rebounded nicely in the second round. He was 7-over par after Round One, but birdies on two of his final three holes in the second round helped him finish even par in the afternoon. His play moved him up 19 spots on the player leaderboard into a tie for 51st place.

Bennett Masterson finished the day tied for 26th at 3-over par. After an opening round with 13 pars, Masterson had four birdies with six bogeys in the afternoon. Josiah Tong similarly finished 2-over par with four birdies and six bogeys in the later round. He is tied for 33rd place overall.

"I was very happy for Bennett who is starting to understand how good he can be and how to think his way around the golf course in a college tournament," Burke said. "Both Tony and Josiah really played some wonderful holes and just never gave up. Jack was as excited as he was nervous to start his career but played a wonderful round of golf in the afternoon."

Yale dominated the course and the field, shooting 13-under par to establish a 10-stoke stroke lead over the rest of the 14-team field. Host St. John's and Towson round out the top three.

"It is strange to look at a leaderboard with so many teams who haven't beaten us in the last few years, especially in a tournament and venue where we've won twice and have the second-best all-time team score. But it was fun out there," Burke said. "I hope we play tomorrow but if the rain prevents that, we  have a great deal to build on."

The Rams struggled in the opening round, shooting 12-over par as a team. Bennett Masterson shot a team-best 1-over par in the early round. He had back-to-back birdies on holes 16 and 17 for a strong finish to the round. Josiah Tong and Tony Liu were both 2-over in the opening round. Jack Quinn was URI's fourth scorer in his collegiate debut, carding a 7-over par, though he was a solid 1-under for the final five holes of the round.
