DAVIDSON, N.C. - First-year player Jack Quinn had a solid day, but Rhode Island had to battle back after it struggled in its opening round of the River Run Collegiate Monday. The Rams shot 21-over par as a team for the day and find themselves in ninth place in the 13-team field.

North Carolina A&T and host Davidson were the only teams to finish under par for the day. NC A&T leads the field at 6-under par, three strokes ahead of the Wildcats. Rounding out the top three is Towson, which is even par.

Quinn was the consistent bright spot for URI. In the first round he was the lone Ram under par. He started on the third hole and sank a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole. Other than that, his card was clean with 17 pars.

His second round was similarly solid, if not more of an up-and-down adventure along the way. Quinn began the afternoon round on the third hole and was 2-over par through his first three holes after back-to-back bogeys. That was followed by two straight birdies on six and seven to get back to even. Over his final 13 holes, Quinn had three birdies, three bogeys and seven pars to finish the round with an even-par 72.

Heading into the final round, Quinn is tied for ninth place in the 75-player field at 1-under par. He is five strokes off the leader, Spence Hagood of Presbyterian.

"Jack Quinn was masterful," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "It's always been the ultimate my view to have a clean card which means no bogies or worse. In the first round, he started par and birdie, followed by 16 pars. he followed all that with the even par in the second round and was our shining light."

The rest of the lineup offered uneven results. Tony Liu and Owen Rooney are tied for 42nd overall, both at 7-over par. Liu was having a great second round, hitting 2-under par through his first 16 holes. However an eight on the par-3 17th hole provided costly.

Rooney did well to give the team a 1-over 73 in the morning round. That round featured five birds, four bogeys and one double bogey. Rooney's best stretch was a six-hole span from holes 11 through 16 in which he had two birdies and four pars. In the afternoon, Rooney was 6-over par, causing him to slip.

Josiah Tong overcome a rough morning round i which he was 11-over par. He was 1-under through the first eight holes, but six bogeys and two double bogeys caused him to drop all the way to 73rd place.

Showing his ability to bounce back, Tong was one of only 13 players to be under par in the second round. He shot a 1-under par 71 with three birdies and two bogeys to jump 13 spots into a tie for 60th place.

"Tony and Josiah were ultimately brilliant and showed character," Burke said. "I tremendously proud of Owen, who was one over in the first round. We have a lot of work to do, but we've shown we can play terrific golf. We've also shown we can't maintain that, but I have faith in these guys that we'll work it out."
