HAMPDEN, Mass. - Tony Liu and Jack Quinn gave Rhode Island a 1-2 finish and led the Rams to the team title at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse Tuesday.

Liu and Quinn were impeccable on the back, helping URI run away from the 14-team field for its third title at GreatHorse in six years. URI shot 4-under par as a team Tuesday, finishing an impressive 11 strokes ahead of second-place Boston College.

"This was a program win. This is what people like Billy Walthouse, Joe Leavitt, Brandon Gillis, Chris Francoeur, Bryson Richards and others developed," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "This team was brought here to be champions, and even though we played with three players who combine had one college tournament last year under their belts, we were dominant.

"I told the boys at breakfast that the other teams in this tournament played us, and we were here to play the golf course. I was really proud of both Bryant and Providence, both of whom were ahead of us at some point during the day. They really pushed us. Those two programs are on the rise and will be part of the new New England order. And I never count Boston College and Drew Kayser their coach out of any tournament we're in."
Liu - who won his first career individual title - was 5-under par on the back nine. He recorded birdies on holes 10, 13 and 17 while also carding an eagle on 11. He was 7-under for the tournament. He was the person in the 84-player field to be under par in both rounds.

"I was super happy for Tony especially. He is playing like the player we recruited," Burke said. "He rose from the ashes of a couple years ago and is showing what kind of person and player he is."

Quinn was a revelation in his third career tournament. He shot 4-under par in the final round. After a tough double-bogey on the ninth hole, Quinn caught fire and recorded five birdies and four pars over the final nine holes. He jumped nine spots on the final day to finish in a tie for second place at 2-under par overall.

Owen Rooney rebounded from a tough opening round to deliver a solid 1-over par 73. He was 2-under par over his final six holes to punctuate a strong day.

Josiah Tong and Sebastian Carlsson both two-over par in the final round, ensuring a strong team score. In fact, all six Rams on the course were 2-over par or better for the day. First-year player Mihir Roperia was 2-over while competing as an individual.

Tong finished the tournament tied for 12th place, while Rooney and Carlsson both tied for 30th.

"Our hats off to the UConn staff, Billy Downes, the head pro at GreatHorse, and the Antonacci family and staff for always putting on one of the best tournaments of the year," Burke said. "We are going to have a little team fun this weekend when we go to Martha's Vineyard to play Farm Neck Golf Club. The guys have earned it!"
