KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island Football's versatile wide receiver
Tommy Smith received an invitation to the Pittsburgh Steelers Mini Camp following the 2025 NFL Draft.
Over the span of his career, Smith lined up as a half back, fullback, tight end and wide receiver for the Rams while also serving an invaluable role in the program's special teams unit. Rhody's leader in special teams tackles (nine), Smith helped URI finish third in the league in punt return defense and fourth in kickoff return defense. For his efforts, he was tabbed to the All-CAA Football First Team as a special teams player.
Also named to the All-CAA Football Second Team as a fullback, two of his five carries in 2024 were for touchdowns as he unlocked a new part of his game. One of the scores came in Rhody's historic first-round win over Central Connecticut State in the NCAA FCS Playoffs. Smith's stalwart play helped URI win the CAA Football title while earning an at-large bid to the postseason to end a 39-year playoff drought.
Production followed the Maynard, Mass. native wherever he went on the field, as 20 of his 27 receptions out wide were good for first downs. In total, Smith tallied 413 receiving yards and caught three touchdown passes.
In addition to the recognition he garnered from the conference, Smith was named to the New England Football Writers Association All-New England Team and landed on the Phil Steele All-CAA Football Second Team.
Smith joins long snapper
Donato Crisanti (New York Jets) and defensive back
Braden Price (Miami Dolphins) in earning a mini camp invite this year.
