Senior Sasha Gotsmanov (Woodbury, Minn.) scored for the fifth-straight game and added an assist as the University of Rhode Island men's soccer team blanked Richmond 3-0 Saturday at First Market Stadium.
Rhode Island improved to 7-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Atlantic 10. Richmond dropped to 2-7-2 and 1-2-1 in the conference.
Gotsmanov scored what turned out to be his third game-winning goal of the season in the 29th minute Sunday, taking a pass from junior Brian Mazza (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and beating the keeper.
Gotsmanov entered the weekend leading the Atlantic 10 in scoring and goals and was sixth in the nation in points per game and seventh in goals per game. After scoring the game-tying goal Friday at George Washington and then notching a goal and assist Sunday, he now has 12 goals in 12 games and five assists for 29 points on the season.
Gotsmanov is now ninth on the Rams' all-time scoring list with 72 points and has 28 goals, which ties him for 11th on the all-time list.
Senior Simon Gatti (Welland, Ontario) scored his second goal of the season on a breakaway from midfield to give the Rams a 2-0 lead at the half.
Sophomore Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario) then scored his sixth goal of the season on assists from freshman Dawid Badecki (Jelenia Gora, Poland) and Gotsmanov.
Rhode Island out-shot the Spiders 22-10. Rhode Island junior Dean Ruddy (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) made five saves in 86 minutes and red-shirt freshman Mark Sauter (Colombus, Ohio) came in off the bench to record one save.
The Rams return home after a seven-game road stretch in which they posted a 3-3-1 record. Rhody will finish the regular season with six of its last eight games at home starting with a match-up with Xavier on Friday at 7 p.m. at the URI Soccer Complex.
