Box Score
KINGSTON, R.I. -
Senior Sasha Gotsmanov (Woodbury, Minn.), the nation's leader in total goals, had a pair of tallies and freshman Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) netted the game-winner with 7:34 remaining to give the University of Rhode men's soccer team a 3-2 win over Xavier on Friday at URI Soccer Complex.
With the win, Rhode Island head coach Ed Bradley pulled into a tie with Geza Henni as the winningest coach in URI Soccer history. Bradley now has a 175-125-21 record in 16 seasons at URI and a 202-134-35 overall record in 19 seasons as a collegiate head coach. Bradley will look to become the all-time winningest coach in URI soccer history on Sunday when the Rams host Dayton at 1 p.m. at the URI Soccer Complex. Henni led his teams to 175 victories over 20 seasons at Rhode Island.
Gotsmanov scored two goals for his third multi-goal game of the season and became just the eighth player in Rhode Island men's soccer history to score 30 career goals. He has scored in six-straight games and now leads the entire country in total goals with 14 goals in 13 games. He entered the weekend sixth in the nation in goals per game and seven in points per game. Gotsmanov has an Atlantic 10-leading 33 points on the season and is now eighth on the Rhode Island all-time scoring list with 76 career points.
The Rams improved to 8-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Atlantic 10, having put together a four-game unbeaten streak. Rhode Island, which returned home after a seven-game road trip, is a perfect 3-0 at the URI Soccer Complex.
Gotsmanov put the Rams on the board just 3:15 into the game when junior Brian Mazza (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) took a shot that was blocked and deflected out to Gotsmanov near the end line to the left of the goal. Gotsmanov collected the ball, made one touch to give himself a better angle, and blasted a shot inside the opposite post for his 13th goal of the season.
Xavier (4-8-1, 2-2-1 Atlantic 10) tied the game on an unassisted goal by Nick Frasher in the 18th minute, when the Rams were unable to clear the ball and Frasher came up with it six yards out. But the Rams took the lead back when Tumicz was taken down by Xavier goalkeeper Brian Schaeper in the box to earn a penalty kick. Gotsmanov converted the kick for his 30th career goal, but Xavier would not let it stand as the game-winner.
The Musketeers were awarded a penalty kick for a tackle inside the box just 1:12 into the second half and Frasher converted it for his second goal of the game and sixth of the season. That's how the score remained until sophomore Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario) found Mazza in front of the goal and Mazza tapped the ball over to Tumicz, who blasted his second goal of the season off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Rhode Island out-shot Xavier 23-15 for the game with Schaeper making nine saves for the Musketeers and junior Dean Ruddy (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) posting four saves for the Rams.
