BRONX, N.Y. - Senior Sasha Gotsmanov (Woodbury, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal for his NCAA-leading 17th goal of the season as the University of Rhode Island men's soccer team edged Fordham 2-1 Sunday.

Gotsmanov scored off a header on a pass from freshman Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) with 5:32 remaining in the first half. The goal held up as Gotsmanov's fourth game-winning goal of the season. He leads the nation in total goals and total points with 17 goals and 40 points in 16 games this season.

The senior has 83 career points which puts him seventh on the school's all-time scoring list, just four points behind Rhode Island assistant coach and former standout player Gareth Elliot, who is fifth on the list with 87 points. Gotsmanov moved into a three-way tie for fifth on the Rhode Island all-time goals' list, tying Steve Collins (1965-69) ad Rich Crocker (1969-72).

Rhode Island (10-5-1, 5-2-1 Atlantic 10) took the early lead exactly 12:00 minutes into the game when freshman Danleigh Borman (Cape Town, South Africa) scored his second goal of the season with both coming in the last three games. Sophomore Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario), who is second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring behind Gotsmanov, had set up Borman's goal on a cross for his seventh assist and 25th point of the year.

Fordham (3-10-2. 1-5-2 Atlantic 10) tied the score when Scott Felluss scored on a header off a corner kick with 13:40 left in the first half.

The score remained tied for the next eight minutes when Gotsmanov headed Tumicz's cross into the net. The two teams played a scoreless second half with Fordham having to play the last 24 minutes of the game a man down due to a red card.

Rhode Island out-shot Fordham 12-4. Rhody junior goalkeeper Dean Ruddy (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) made one save in net, while Fordham's Stephen Faber made two.
