PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -
University of Rhode Island men's soccer coach Ed Bradley won the 200th game of his career when the Rams blanked Saint Joseph's 3-0 Sunday.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Rams, who had taken Bradley to the brink of 200 with a 5-1 start and No. 21 national ranking. The defending Atlantic 10 Champion Rams are now 6-4, 1-1 in the conference.
Bradley, a native of Providence, R.I. and former All-Yankee Conference player for the Rams has a 200-133-34 record in 19 seasons at the collegiate level. He posted a 27-9-14 record in three years at Rhode Island College and now has a 173-124-20 mark in his 16th season at URI. Bradley now needs just two victories to tie Geza Henni as the winningest coach in URI soccer history. Henni posted a 175-107-31 record in 20 years as head coach of the Rams.
"It's nice to finally get it, I had to wait a little while," Bradley said. "It just means I've been coaching a long time. It's more important that we played well. We played so much better confidence wise today.
The Rams dominated the Hawks (1-7-1, 0-1-1 Atlantic 10), outshooting the hosts 23-5.
"This was probably the best defensive game of the season for us," Bradley said. "We also played well the second half of the Temple game on Friday (a 3-2 OT loss for the Rams) so I can see it coming around for us."
Rhode Island sophomore Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario) scored two goals for his second multi-goal game of the season and senior Sasha Gotsmanov (Woodbury, Minn.) scored his 10th goal in 10 games this season and added an assist to give him 24 points on the year.
Gotsmanov, who entered the weekend leading the Atlantic 10 in scoring and goals and was 18th in the nation in scoring and 11th in goals per game, has scored a goal in each of the last three games and in eight of the Rams' 10 games this season.
Gotsmanov continues to climb the Rhode Island all-time scoring list with 67 career points, which puts him 10th on the school's all-time scoring list. His 26 career goals puts him 12th on the school's all-time goals list.
Junior goalkeeper Dean Ruddy (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) made three saves in net to record his third shutout of the season.
The Rams opened the scoring when Gonsalves took a pass from junior captain Simon Gatti (Welland, Ontario) and scored 24:57 into the match for what proved to be the game-winner. The score remained 1-0 until the half, but Gonsalves tallied his second goal of the game just 21 seconds into the second half for a 2-0 lead.
With his second two-goal game of the season, Gonsalves moved to second on the team in scoring with 14 points and second in goals with five. Gotsmanov made it 3-0 on an unassisted goal with 33 minutes remaing in the match.
Rhode Island hits the road again next weekend, traveling to George Washington on Friday and Richmond on Saturday.
"Hopefully we can go on the road next weekend and get two wins and then get something going at home," Bradley said.
After the games with George Washington and Richmond next weekend, Rhode Island will close the season with five of its last seven matches at home.
