The University of Rhode Island men's soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime tie with George Washington on Friday afternoon in the nation's capital.
The two teams played through a scoreless first half, then traded goals in the second session and then played through two scoreless overtime periods as the Rams moved to 6-4-1, 1-1-1 in the Atlantic 10 and the Colonials went to 1-6-3, 0-1-2 in the Atlantic 10.
George Washington got on the scoreboard first when Andre Chapman scored off of a rebound just 2:12 into the second half.
Rhode Island was quick to respond on a free kick just three minutes later when senior Sasha Gotsmanov (Woodbury, Minn.) scored on a header off an assist from freshman Dawid Badecki (Jelenia Gora, Poland). It was the 11th goal in 11 games for Gotsmanov, who entered the weekend sixth in the nation in points per game, averaging 2.3, and seventh in goals per game at 1.0. He now has an Atlantic 10 leading 26 points in 11 games this season.
Gotsmanov is currently 10th on the URI all-time scoring list with 69 career points and is 12th on the Rams' all-time goals list with 27.
George Washington out-shot Rhode Island 17-11, but the Rams held a 4-1 advantage in shots the extra sessions, but were unable to score.
