CORVALLIS, Ore. -
University of Rhode Island men's soccer coach Ed Bradley fell short in a bid to win his 200th career game Sunday when the No. 21 ranked Rams were upset by Oregon State 3-0 in the Oregon State Invitational.
Bradley's bid for his 200th career victory was spoiled by Oregon State head coach Dana Taylor, who played for Bradley at Barrington (R.I.) High School. Both of Taylor's assistant coaches, Anthony Latronica and Mick McDermott, played for Bradley at Rhode Island as teammates on the 1995 Atlantic 10 championship team which finished with the best record in school history at 19-2-2 (.826).
The No. 21 ranked Rams had a five-game winning streak snapped as they dropped to 5-2 on the season. Oregon State, a participant in the NCAA Tournament last fall, improved to 3-4 with a three-game unbeaten streak.
Rhode Island was both shutout and out-shot for the first time this season, but only by a 15-13 margin. Junior goalkeeper Dean Ruddy (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) made five saves in net for the Rams. Oregon State keeper Jason Mariner had seven saves.
Oregon State's Matt Johnson put the Beavers on the board off an assist from Loren Hill just 13:41 into the game. That's how the score remained at the half, but Brett Gardner's unassisted goal made it 2-0 just six minutes into the second session. Bryan Jordan tallied on an assist from Carlos Cornejo with 9:01 left to play to finish the scoring.
The Rams return to the East Coast and visit Boston University on Wednesday at 4 p.m. as Bradley will take another shot at his 200th career victory. He is just two wins from tying his predecessor Geza Henni (175-107-31) as the winningest coach in school history. Bradley currently has a 172-123-20 mark in 16 seasons at Rhode Island. He posted a 27-9-14 record in three seasons at Rhode Island College to bring his career total to 199-132-34.
