No. 24 Ranked Men's Soccer Falls To Boston University In OT

Sept. 22, 2004

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. - The No. 24 ranked University of Rhode Island men's soccer team lost to Boston University 3-2 in overtime Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.

The Rams (5-3) overcame a 2-0 deficit with two goals by senior Sasha Gotsmanov (Woodbury, Minn.) in the final 20 minutes of the game, including the tying goal with 3:32 left.

But Boston University (1-4) scored when Chris Sedrick intercepted a pass just outside of the box and scored 1:39 into the extra session. It was the Terriers first win of the season after four losses, three three of which came to nationally ranked opponents, including a 2-1 loss to then No. 6 Boston College.

Rhode Island has dropped two-straight since a five-game winning streak had them ranked No. 21 in the nation.

Boston University took a 2-0 lead in the first half and held that lead until Gotsmanov scored his seventh goal of the season. The Rams kept the pressure on the Terriers until junior Brian Mazza (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) beat two defenders and passed to Gotsmanov, who tallied his second goal of the game and eighth on the season.

Gotsmanov has eight goals in eight games and has two assists for 18 points. He has moved up to a tie for 12th on the school's all-time scoring list with Adam Homler (1984-87) at 61 career points.

The Rams have a week off before hosting in-state rival Brown on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at the URI Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on Cox-3.
