Men's Soccer Tops Rider, 3-1

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The University of Rhode Island men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season Sunday, defeating Rider 3-1 in the Rider Invitational.

Senior Sasha Gotsmanov (Woodbury, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal and freshman Dawid Badecki (Jelenia Gora, Poland) scored for the second time in as many games this season.

Badecki's goal put the Rams on the board nine minutes into the game on an unassisted goal off of a rebound.

Rider tied the game at 1-1 when Kyle Pillitteri scored off an assist from Sandro DeCristofaro in the 17th minute. The game remained tied until Gotsmanov scored an unassisted goal which turned out to be the game winner in the 62nd minute.

Junior Brian Mazza (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) added an insurance goal with three minutes remaining.

Junior goalkeeper Dean Ruddy (Mount Prospect, Ill.) made six saves to pick up his first win.

Rhode Island (1-1) returns to action with its home opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Harvard at the URI Soccer Complex.
