ST. LOUIS--No. 3 seed Rhode Island used a second-half surge to top No.
6 seed Massachusetts 2-0 in a quarterfinal match at the men's soccer
Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament at Saint Louis University's Robert
R. Hermann Stadium. Lukasz Tumicz netted the game winner in the 71st
minute and Kedan Crosby added an insurance goal nine minutes later.
With the win, Rhode Island (12-7-1) advances to the semifinal round
and will face No. 2 Duquesne Friday
at 6 pm CST. UMass ends its season with an 8-10-2 overall record.
After a quiet first half, Tumicz got the scoring started when he
drilled a ball from 18 yards out to the left side past UMass
goalkeeper Zack Simmons. Jeffrey Gonsalves was credited with an
assist on the play. The Rams added an insurance goal nine minutes
later when Crosby deflected a centering pass from Tumicz just inside
the right post.
Meanwhile, the Rhode Island defense and Rams keeper Dean Ruddy kept
the Minutemen off the board by turning away seven corner kicks,
including six in the second half alone. Ruddy preserved the shutout
by making five saves, three of those coming in the second session.
Each team managed 10 shots in the contest, and UMass held a 7-6
advantage in corner kicks.
