MEN'S SOCCER FALLS, 2-1, TO BROWN IN OVERTIME AT NCAA TOURNAMENT

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rhode Island junior midfielder Jeffrey Gonsalves career high 13th goal of the season was not enough as the Rams fell, 2-1, in overtime to Brown in the first round of the Men's NCAA Soccer Tournament Saturday.

"I am really proud of how our guys played today," said head coach Ed Bradley. "They all really played their hearts out."

Gonsalves gave the Rams the, 1-0, lead 22 minutes and 23 seconds into the first half on the assist from sophomore midfielder Danleigh Borman. Borman played the ball through the Brown defense to Gonsalves who drew out the goalie and tipped the ball into the far left corner of the net.

Nine minutes into the second half, sophomore forward Steve Mellen was issued a red card and ejected from the game, Brown took advantage and tied the score on the free kick. Keith Caldwell scored his first goal of the season to even-up the score 1-1.

Rhode Island had a chance to win the game on a corner kick with 12 seconds left in regulation, but a shot from senior midfielder Simon Gatti was deflected by Brown goalkeeper Jarrett Leech.

Right off the whistle in the over time period Rhode Island drove the ball into the Brown box and had three shots on goal before the Bears cleared it to URI's side of the field. Three minutes and 23 seconds into the overtime period Brown's Ben Bracket score the game-winning goal from Darren Howerton off a Bear corner kick.

Dean Ruddy, URI's senior goalkeeper picked-up three saves on the day.

Brown advances to the second round of the NCAA tournament where they will face the No.1 Maryland Terrapins on Tuesday (Nov.15).
