BRADENTON, Fla. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team lost to Miami (Ohio) 5-2 in the opening game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Rhode Island sophomore Scott Brown (Portland, Maine) went 3-for-3 with a RBI for the Rams.

Miami (8-7) used a three-run second inning to send Rhode Island starter Zack Zuercher (Warwick, R.I.) to his second loss of the season. Zuercher went seven innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

Rhode Island cut the gap to 3-1 in the fourth when senior Chris Stelma (Glenwood, N.J.) and Brown hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning and with runners on first and third, Stelma scored on a doubleplay.

The Redhawks got that run back in the top of the seventh thanks to a lead-off double, an error and a sacrifice fly.

Rhode Island (1-8) pulled within two runs again in the eighth when senior Mike Rainville (Pawtucket, R.I.) reached first on an error, moved over to third after singles by junior Wayne Russo (Warwick, R.I.) and junior Daryl Holcomb (Wilmington, Del.), and then scored on a RBI-grounder by Brown to make the score 4-2.

Miami quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the eighth for the final outcome.
