BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Sophomore Adam Perkins (Hudson, N.H.) struck out seven and allowed only one earned run in getting the win and sophomore Scott Brown (Portland, Maine) had three hits and drove in three runs as the University of Rhode Island baseball team defeated Long Island 7-2 Tuesday.

Perkins improved to 2-0 on the season, scattering eight hits through 7 2/3 innings and striking out seven. The lefthander was relieved by senior closer Mick Lefort (Lincoln, R.I.) with two on and two out in the eighth. Lefort walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, but struck out the next hitter to end the inning and pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season.

Brown had three hits for the second time this season and knocked in a season-high three RBIs to give him a team-leading 11 RBIs. This was the 20th multi-hit game of the sophomore's career and the fourth time in his career that Brown has registered three or more hits in a game. He is now second on the team with a .349 batting average.

Rhode Island senior Matt Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) had one hit, giving him a 10-game hitting streak since opening the season 0-for-6 in the two games at No. 12 ranked Florida.

Sophomore Ryan Cunningham (Centreville, Va.) had two hits and drove in a run, while junior Daryl Holcomb (Wilmington, Del.) also had a hit and drove in a run for the Rams. Senior Joe Viscuso (Farmingdale, N.Y.) also had a hit and RBI.

"We played a solid baseball game for the first time in a while," Rhode Island head coach Frank Leoni said.

The Rams move to 3-9 on the season, while Long Island drops to 2-4. Rhody is scheduled to play at Sacred Heart on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

Rhode Island opens Atlantic 10 play this weekend in Washington, D.C. with a match-up between the 2004 Atlantic 10 East Division champion Rams and the 2004 A10 West Division champion George Washington Colonials.
