Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team lost its Atlantic 10 opener to George Washington 8-3 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Colonials jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they improved to 13-8 overall and 1-0 in the Atlantic 10.

Rhode Island senior Matt Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) had singled to bring his hitting streak to 11 games and drove in all three Rhody runs to give him 10 RBIs on the season. Senior Joe Viscuso (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had two hits for the Rams.

Rhode Island junior Dan Frederick (Dracut, Mass.) took the loss, allowing six hits and six earned runs in four innings of work.

"Dan didn't get hit that hard, but he was having a hard time hitting his spots," Rhode Island head coach Frank Leoni said. "We made a couple of mistakes behind him defensively and didn't have enough to come back on them."

Rhody sophomore James Norcott (Norton, Mass.) pitched two scoreless, hitless innings of relief.

Rhody drops to 3-9 and 0-1 in the Atlantic 10.
