The University of Rhode Island baseball team took scored three runs off All-American lefthander Nick Hill, but Army scored five runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to take a 9-5 victory in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Rhode Island, the No. 4 ranked team in the Northeast, dropped to 30-19. Army, the No. 6 ranked team in the Northeast, improved to 38-11.
This was the first since April 6 that the Rams lost back-to-back games and the first time in 26 games that Rhody had allowed more than six runs in a game.
Rhode Island senior Matt Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) hit his team-leading 11th home run of the season, which brings him one shy of the single-season school record. Sophomore Ryan Cunningham (Centreville, Va.) had three hits and junior Daryl Holcomb (Wilmington, Del.) added two hits.
The Rams scored three runs against Army All-American Nick Hill, who has a 10-1 record on the year and entered the game with just a 1.18 ERA. Rhody led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but that's when Army erupted for five runs to take a 6-4 lead.
Rhode Island scored a run in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 6-5, but Army scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away.
