Senior Matt Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.) hit his 12th home run of the season which ties the University of Rhode Island school record as the Rams defeated Army 10-4 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Sullivan, who hit his 11th homer of the season in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, connected on a solo shot in the fifth inning that brought him into a three-way tie for the school's single-season record. Dan Batz hit 12 home runs last season and Rob Farrell belted 12 round-trippers in 1997. Sullivan finsihed the game with two hits and two runs scored.
Rhode Island, the No. 2 ranked team in New England and the No. 4 ranked team in the Northeast, concluded the regular season with a 31-19 record. Army, the No. 6 ranked team in New England, dropped to 38-12.
Sophomore Ryan Cunningham (Centreville, Va.) had three hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Cunningham recorded three hits in each of game of Saturday's doubleheader to raise his average to a team-leading .367.
Senior Mike Rainville (Pawtucket, R.I.) had two hits and junior Josh Nestor (Nashua, N.H.) had a double and drove in four runs in the game.
Sophomore Steve Holmes (Lincoln, R.I.) earned the win in relief, going 3 2/3 innings, alllowing three hits and one run, while striking out three. Holmes improved to 6-1 on the season and raised his career record to 11-2. He is URI's career leader in winning at .846.
The two-time Atlantic 10 regular-season champion Rams are the top seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and have a bye in the first round. Rhode Island will play the winner of the No. 4 and No. 5 seed on Thursday at noon in Dayton's Fifth Third Field.
