Fordham Takes 1-0 Extra Inning Victory

May 8, 2005

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island senior Dan Frederick (Dracut, Mass.) allowed only a bunt single through seven shutout innings, but the first game of Sunday's doubleheader went to extra innings and Fordham patched together two doubles in the ninth inning to take a 1-0 win.

Fordham (30-16, 14-5 Atlantic 10) pulled within one game of Rhode Island (26-16, 15-4) for first place in the Atlantic 10 East Division. Rhode Island, which has already locked up its third-straight Atlantic 10 Tournament berth, could still clinch its third-straight East Division title by taking the next two games of the series. Rhody would also need to win the next two games to take its 14th-straight Atlantic 10 series victory.

Fordham freshman Cory Riordan pitched a complete-game two-hit shutout to improve to 8-3 on the season. He struck out 10 and walked two in nine innings.

Frederick (4-4) was the hard-luck loser in his last start at Bill Beck Field. He struck out nine, allowed two hits and was charged with one run in 8 1/3 innings of work.

He retired the first 10 batters he faced before allowing a bunt single in the fourth inning. Frederick then retired the next 13 in a row, before walking his first batter of the game with two outs in the eighth inning.

He got the next batter to fly out to left to end the inning, but gave up a costly lead-off double to Rich Goulian in the ninth. A sacrifice bunt moved Goulian to third and Rhode Island head coach Frank Leoni brought senior Mick Lefort (Lincoln, R.I.) in to pitch.

Lefort struck out the first batter he faced for the second out of the inning, but Fordham's Greg Smith snuck a grounder over the first base bag and down the right field line to plate the first and only run of the game.

Riordan retired Rhody in order in the ninth, but senior Matt Sullivan (Nashua. N.H.) did send a charge into a ball to deep left that the howling wind knocked down about 10-feet from the fence.

Senior Joe Viscuso (Farmingdale, N.Y.) hit a double and senior Mike Rainville hit a two-out single to left in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rainville reached base three times on the day with two walks and finished 1-for-1.
