Oct. 18, 2006

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team played to a 3-3 tie with in-state rival Brown on Wednesday night, October 18. The Rams were led by juniors Lukasz Tumicz (Bisztynek, Poland) and Danleigh Borman (Cape Town, South Africa) who each recorded a goal and an assist in the draw.

Rhode Island was first to get on the board, at 37:08, when Borman fed a pass to Tumicz to had a short breakaway before sending the ball past Brown's Jarrett Leech for the 1-0 lead. The Rams headed into the half with the advantage, but were unable to hold on for long as Andrew Daniels netted an equalizer off a pass from Brian Joyce just two minutes into the second frame.

Borman and Tumicz connected again in the 61st minute. This time though, it was Tumicz who played the ball to Borman. Borman went on to beat Leech with a shot to the lower left corner, giving Rhode Island a 2-1 lead. Just a minute and a half later, the Bears' Rhett Bernstein countered with header off Brian Joyce's corner kick.

Less than two minutes after tying things up, Brown scored a go-ahead goal on a shot by Chris Roland to put the Bears up, 3-2. Senior Jeffrey Gonsalves (Markham, Ontario) responded with his league-leading 14th goal of the season off a pass from junior Dawid Badecki (Jelenia Gora, Poland) at 67:51. Badecki played a perfect ball to Gonsalves, who maneuvered past Leech and sent a shot into the net to even things up, 3-3.

With the score knotted, URI headed into overtime unwilling relive its heartbreaking overtime loss to Brown in last season's NCAA tournament. The Rams controlled play through the majority of the first OT period, shutting down the Bears while firing off three shots of their own. Again in the second overtime, the always-solid URI defense kept the Bears from even taking a shot. Tumicz and Gonsalves each had a look in the game's final minutes, but neither was able to find the back of the net, ending the match in a 3-3 tie.

In all, Rhode Island outshot Brown, 21-7. Freshman Chris Pennock (Middlesborough, England) recorded one save Rhody while Leech had 10 for the Bears.

The Rams (8-4-4, 5-1-0 A-10) are back at the URI Soccer Complex on Sunday, October 22, when they resume league play with a 1:00 p.m. match against Massachusetts (8-5-3, 2-3-1 A-10).
